The Latest Mounts of Mayhem Update Brings Forth a Stunningly Wild New Spear to the Game

The seasonal content update for Minecraft has arrived — and it brings with it the initial fresh armament introduced into the game since the mace made its debut. The lance is now available and it might just change how you play Minecraft, especially if you enjoy mayhem.

A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem

The Mayhem Mounts update also incorporates a host of fresh elements and enhancements centered around riding animals in the game. That driving concept made the spear the perfect fit for this release, as the creators had already known it was the moment to introduce a fresh combat tool.

"From the outset, we understood that we aimed for a new weapon that would provide extended reach, and we designed it specifically for mounted combat," stated a lead developer. "We prototyped a number of concepts, but the lance was the one that both felt great when we ran our trials and also made sense for the use case."

If you're curious whether mounted combat means you can charge at your friends on steeds, the answer is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an attack perfectly suited for it.

"Mounted lance combat] is a primary functions for the spear, and it's a blast," the lead continues. "The spear has a dual attack system: You have the thrust, where you just stab your enemy. But you also have a charge attack where you lower your spear and get increased harm [with] the more speed and velocity you have. So [it’s] perfect for mounted duels."

Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures

The chaotic fun doesn't have to stop there, though. If you're far enough into the game that you've been to The End, the developers have an even more ridiculous idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] excellent for equipping the wings and going out and making some real mayhem," she hints.

In other words: Sky jousting is now real, and it should be made an Olympic sport immediately.

Another significant inclusion in this new update is the Nautilus. This aquatic being, which is based on the seashells players have gathered for years, can be domesticated and mounted for submarine exploration. Not only will it carry you through the water faster than swimming, it'll also preserve your breath meter, so there's no necessity to come up for air for fresh air.

The other inclusions are largely things that seek your demise, as is the tradition of Minecraft. As expected, there's also a rotting sea creature appearing in the water, frequently with a Drowned on its back. If you succeed in dispatch the Drowned, though, you can befriend the zombie Nautilus — or the regular one, for that matter — with a spiky fish.

"We've pondered this challenge on and off, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it appeared to be the right time to also bring in something for aquatic environments," the developer explains. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a several proposals for underwater mounts that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus concept art looked compelling, and we have the tie-in to the Nautilus shell that was already in the game."

She also points out that there are actually two different types of zombie Nautilus: regular and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] add variety to what you discover underwater."

Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements

Further inclusions include the sun-proof skeletons, biome-specific skeletons that can endure the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you end up in that environment. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another fresh creature. Camel husks have an striking appearance that sees their ribs poking out. The same goes for zombie horses, who have a comparable exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a spear-carrying zombie on their back.

The last two things on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some highly requested changes to equestrian travel. Now, you can traverse rivers and lakes while atop a horse. Furthermore, netherite horse armor is now available at the crafting table, so you can provide your steed with the top-tier safeguarding it deserves.

A Fittingly Chaotic Finale

All told, the final game drop of the year is a notable addition. The spear on its own — and the potential for chaos — would have constituted a considerable upgrade. Add in the Nautilus, and more things seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a touch more chaotic.

The Mayhem Mounts update is out now for all major editions of Minecraft.
