UK Armed Forces Sites to Host Refugee Applicants in Initiative to End Hotel-Based Usage
Several hundred individuals seeking protection might be placed in defense installations as the authorities seeks to end the reliance of hotel accommodations.
Talks are underway regarding the utilization of two facilities - a facility in Scotland and another in the south of England - for shelter for nine hundred males.
The PM has instructed Interior Ministry and Defense Department representatives to speed up initiatives to locate appropriate military sites.
The government has pledged to end the utilization of temporary hotel accommodations, which have cost billions of pounds and emerged as a focal point for anti-asylum seeker rallies.
Under Consideration Defense Sites
Asylum seekers could be housed in the Cameron Barracks in the Scottish city and Crowborough army training camp in East Sussex by the final days of the upcoming month.
Manufacturing locations, short-term shelter and vacant properties are also being examined for future accommodation.
Government Commitments
Government sources indicated that every facility would adhere to wellbeing requirements.
"Our administration is extremely concerned at the scale of unauthorized immigrants and refugee lodging facilities."
"Our administration will shut down all refugee hotels. Efforts are progressing effectively, with better facilities being identified to alleviate strain on local areas and reduce migrant housing expenditures."
Existing Housing Statistics
Around 32 thousand asylum seekers are currently being housed in hotels, representing a drop from a peak of more than 56,000 in 2023.
A recent report found that billions of public funds had been "wasted" on asylum accommodation.
Previous Military Site Usage
Two ex-armed forces locations - MDP Wethersfield in Essex and the Napier facility in Kent - are already being used to house refugee applicants after being commissioned under the former government.
The Prime Minister remarked on the circumstances, saying: "The government is determined to terminate every refugee hotel. I can't tell you how troubled and alarmed I am that we inherited a challenge as substantial as the current circumstances by the previous administration."
